A small and beautiful oasis in the middle of Kyoto

This was a lovely, beautiful place. Rooted in rich history its the best combination of modern and traditional Ryokan experience. Many upgrades but the rooms are so authentic. We loved staying here. The breakfast was delicious and made with love. Would stay here again.

We liked our stay so much. The staff were super patient and nice. They spent time introducing the room, the garden, the library and the bath rooms. Very accommodating and flexible. The bed is very comfortable and the view is gorgeous. Our breakfast at library is also a plus, really delicious and healthy.

Proceed with caution.

Where do I begin!
Firstly the staff were wonderful and very kind, but this is where the positives end.
I guess if you are seeking a traditional Japanese experience then this maybe worth considering although the price seems disproportionately high given the quality of the room and facilities.
The main issue I had was the stairs in my room to ge from the living room to the bedroom, which are a problem if you have any mobility issues and it could be argued they are a border line Heath and Safety risk. I could not see any photos of the stairs for my room in the Hotel.com website
and felt there should have been some kind of warning well in advance of the booking re this room giving us the option to cancel.
We were forced to checkout after the first night of our 3 night stay because of this issue and pay for another hotel.
The owners refused to provide any form of compensation in the way of a refund despite numerous request.
I await Hotel.com response to this issue.

This is an elegantly appointed Ryokan in the style of old Japan, yet it has all modern conveniences and amenities. It is an architectural beauty, with magnificent gardens and artistic and authentic interior decor as well. But the best feature is the staff of kind, efficient and friendly people who are committed to making your stay memorable. Arigato Gozaimasu! This was an extraordinary and magical experience, not to be missed!

Nous avons réservé pour la nuit du 25 mars au 26 mars la chambre Tsuki avec petit déjeuné. Nous avons adoré le personnel vraiment très gentil et accueillant, ils ferons tout pour vous mettre à l'aise, et créer des souvenirs magiques pour vous. Ne parlant quasiment pas japonais l'équipe utilise traducteurs et anglais facilement et ils sont très souriant et compréhensif! Le Ryokan est également superbe, les chambres et les communs sont très agréables, l'ambiance est zen et paisible! Possibilité de refroidir ou chauffer la chambre au top! N'oubliez pas de prendre l'option petit déjeuné, l'expérience est une fois de plus mémorable avec un petit déjeuné traditionnel de qualité servi directement dans la chambre. Le bain privatif est très appréciable aussi, avec la possibilité de ce laver à la japonaise et de ce relaxer une heure complète! Nous avions un van à garer en plein cœur de Kyoto et l'équipe à été une fois de plus adorable en nous permettant de garer notre van sans surcout! Notre seul regret est de n'avoir réservé qu'une seule nuit au Toshiharu Ryokan pendant notre voyage, et nous espérons revenir le plus vite possible! Merci encore!

Unbeatable ryokan, beautiful and full of history

This was an absolutely unforgettable experience, and i cant recommend this ryokan more highly!
The house is over 100 years old, with a lot of original wood, glass and structure, but modernised to provide comforts like heating/air conditioning, modern toilets and bathrooms and coffee machine. The architecture of it has even placed it in some books about Ryokans. Staff speak excellent English, making it easy for non-Japanese speakers. Yoshiko showed us around and explained how everything works. We felt very welcomed by everyone here, and our stay was truly wonderful. The breakfast was delicious and extravagant, very traditional and they delivered it to our room.
The gardens are beautiful, looking mystical with lots of moss and small trees.
I will mention that the walkway to the bathroom and toilet is an open air walkway (there is a roof and walls, just one side of the walkway is open and faces the garden), so in the winter it may be cold - so bring warm comfy clothes!
There is a lovely library room, where you can have tea snd sweets, and mingle with other guests. This is a really beautiful house, historic and authentic. I will never forget my stay here and the welcoming warmth of everyone we met!

My husband and I booked the Tsuki room for one night. The Ryokan was absolutely beautiful. This place had such charm and the room was so cozy. Everything was perfect about our stay. The staff was so kind and thoughtful towards us. The breakfast in the morning was very delicious. We were able to try both private baths. One in the evening and one in the morning before breakfast. The warm bath was a perfect end to our busy day and fixed our tired feet. The owner came to thank us for staying with them and she saw us off in the morning. Will definitely be back. This place had so much beauty and history all in one.

We truly had the experience of a lifetime at Toshiharu Ryokan. The staff are incredibly warm and thoughtful. When we arrived for check-in we were given a tour of the property, provided with matcha, and we reserved our private onsen times. Our night was very comfortable, the onsen was clean and relaxing with all amenities you could dream of. The breakfast the next morning was delivered to our room by the chef herself - it was spectacular! Down to every last detail, this stay was immaculate and one we will never forget. Thank you to all the Ryokan staff for contributing to our excellent experience.

This property is a traditional haven where guest can discover peace, eat amazing beautifully prepared Japanese and western food. It is conveniently located to all sites. They have the most amazing staff who are excited to share Japanese culture with guests who are so polite and positive. Our morning and evening baths in the private onsen were a meditation. My daughter and I have stayed in many hotels around the world and this one is the most magical. Thank you all at Toshiharu Ryoken!!!Highly recommend.

This is a very traditional ryokan experience and I had a wonderful time!!! I stayed 2 nights after some time in Tokyo and the vibes were immaculate.

Upon arrival you take off your shoes and are greeted, given a tour of the place, escorted to your assigned room, and then given a welcome matcha!

They serve you a traditional Japanese breakfast that differs every morning (you book this in advance when you arrive)

The bath/shower area is shared but you have to reserve a time slot to utilize it (also done when you arrive). It was a great experience.

Yes you sleep on the floor but there are mattress and sleep toppers with a fluffy duvet. It was quite comfortable!

Shoutout to Ando san and Yoshiko for being amazing hosts.

The Toshiharu Ryokan was a great way to start our trip in Kyoto! It was a fun way to experience a traditional Japanese house and the staff was excellent. The bath was super relaxing and the Japanese traditional breakfast was delicious.

The charm of the old ryokan feel and style was so beautiful and quaint! My daughters loved it as their favorite place to stay. The staff was superb! We felt as if the staff and place was like visiting a relative. Loves the library upstairs and the breakfast being offered in our room. Food was superb! Area was so nice to walk everywhere. Highly recommended!

My stay was wonderful, offering an authentic and peaceful Kyoto experience. The traditional ambiance, with tatami mats and sliding shoji doors, and zen like garden made me feel fully immersed in Japanese culture. The staff were kind and attentive, guiding me through the ryokan customs with care.

Breakfast was a beautifully presented, with fresh, seasonal ingredients. The onsen bath was also incredibly relaxing. I highly recommend this ryokan for anyone seeking a genuine Japanese experience!

This is a beautiful and unique property! Stayed there with my teenage son. The building is a 100 year old landmarked property. The Staff is kind and professional and warm. We were treated wonderfully with traditional Japanese breakfast in our room, Japanese baths and modern amenities. They even made dinner and taxi reservations for us. If you are looking for a unique cultural experience I can’t recommend it enough.

One of Kyoto's hidden gems

The place, as the photos show, is enchanting – and conveniently located for exploring the city. We recommend trying the traditional Japanese breakfast (with fresh products and new specials every day). During our trip to Japan, we stayed in different establishments, each with charming and attentive staff, but at Toshiharu Ryokan the team showed the highest levels of thoughtfulness and kindness. This ryokan is tucked in a narrow street of nice 'laneway' houses just north of the Kyoto Station, Can wald but easy short taxi ride. It is one of the few old style houses and gives a very authentic feel of Japanese homes. It is small but nice onzen, breakfast and gardens. Lots of nice dining options nearby and very central to use public transit to the tourist sites. Good english and VERY attentive staff. Highly recommend.

Supert opphold - Topp service

Vi kom frem tidlig på morgenen, trøtte og våte (masse regn). Ble møtt med omtanke og omsorg. Klær ble tørket, fikk låne regnfrakker og bagasje ble passet på.


Strålende senger, varmt bad og herlig privat hage. Prøvde ikke frokosten, så den kan jeg ikke uttale meg om.

Man hat sich willkommen gefühlt, das Personal war sehr hilfsbereit und zuvorkommend. Das Frühstück war immer großartig. Das Haus an sich ist seht authentisch, man hat ein Gefühl von Ruhe und Entspannung, wenn man da ist. Onsen war auch ein Highlight.

Staying at this Ryokan was the highlight of our entire Japan trip! If you are looking for a traditional Japanese experience/stay, this is the perfect fit for you! From the moment we stepped in the door, we were greeted with warmth, hospitality, and hot tea/mochi. Our room was beautiful and the layout beds were very comfortable too. Our room had walk out access to the beautiful garden. The shower/bath area was incredibly clean and I had the most relaxing bathing experience ever! You must have the traditional Japanese breakfast as well, as this will complete your whole stay! If I’m ever back in Kyoto, I’d love to stay here again! The hospitality, food, and staff were beyond amazing.

Our stay at Tohshiharu Ryokan was amazing. The entire family of staff was just that - like family welcoming us into their home and treating us like honored guests. They went out of their way to make us comfortable and even managed to do the impossible: they set up a kaiseki dinner for us at the last minute with less than 12 hours notice.

We chose the smallest of the rooms - the Satsuki - because it had its own private wash room (sink and toilet) off the private Japanese courtyard garden. Despite the fact the wash room was cold because it was an unheated, outdoor room, the heated toilet seat made up for it in addition to the fact that we had our own wonderful kotatsu (table with heat underneath) to warm up if our toes got chilly.

The futons were super comfortable and the down comforters were indulgent beyond belief.

The daily traditional breakfasts were amazing, as were the lovely baths. And there was a little library with snacks, tea, and coffee.

We couldn’t have had a better stay.

Very friendly staff, good service and special atmosphere with over a hundred years old building. Two different baths (not onsen) and cozy room. We paid 400 euros (for one night) to get real ryokan experience and spent nice and relaxing time in there. However it was not really worth of that amount of money.

Our stay at Toshiharu Ryokan was the highlight of our trip. A glimpse into Japan’s past with modern amenities. Beautiful ryokan, the staff go above and beyond to make your stay a great one. The baths are a blessing after a full-day of walking. It feels authentic, sleeping on tatami mats was surprisingly comfortable. Breakfast was traditional and very well prepared. For those who prefer a north american meal there's a great coffee shop nearby.

What a wonderful stay we had at Toshiharu Ryokan! The staff were so kind, helpful and thoughtful. The ryokan itself is sparkling clean, with several beautiful traditional Japanese gardens and generously sized tatami rooms. We chose the breakfast option, which I do recommend – they are prepared in-house by the owner and her mother and were the best meals we had in Kyoto (and we ate at some very good restaurants). The nightly bath in the ofuro, in a lovely smelling wooden bathtub, was so relaxing. Our room was on the first floor and opened out into a charming Japanese garden – when we slid open the glass doors it was just like being outside. Staying in a ryokan is a very special experience and a window into tradiitional Japanese life and values. We give Toshiharu Ryokan our highest recommendation!

Questo Ryokan è un angolo di vero Giappone. Il personale è il tocco in più: ci accolto un ragazzo gentilissimo e pieno di energia che ci è rimasto nel cuore. Ci ha descritto alla perfezione ogni angolo della struttura e il funzionamento del bagno giapponese (piccolo ma essenziale). La camera con tatami stupenda e molto tradizionale. Dormire nel futon è un’esperienza che dovrebbero provare tutti per immergersi a pieno nel viaggio. Colazione buonissima e molto ricca portata direttamente in camera. Consigliamo a tutti vivamente questo angolo di Giappone dove l’ospitalità e la gentilezza regnano sovrani.

English traveller - We booked this hotel hoping for one amazing night. It by far exceeded our expectations. The staff was extremely friendly, the atmosphere was so peaceful and quiet. The bath was clean and relaxing, it's a shared bath but you reserve private times.

If you stay here, get the breakfast. What a way to start the day. It was beautiful, it was delicious. With every penny.

A hidden gem!

I cannot say enough good things about our stay. The proprietor, her daughter, and the staff were so kind and welcoming — thoughtful at every turn from breakfast and nighttime baths to ensuring we and our drivers knew where we were going each day. Their hospitality and the extraordinary property helped make our time in Kyoto particularly memorable.

Unforgettable Experience

I did a lot of research in order to find the perfect ryokan and toshiharu did not disappoint. The staff are so friendly and I felt so welcome. They really deliver that classic ryokan experience that you're looking for on your kyoto trip. The location is great too because it's only a few minutes from the subway by walking. Bring something warm if you go in january, like I did, because a lot of the rooms don't have toilets, so you have to use the communal ones. I loved it because it felt like camping and the view of the garden is nice from the washroom, but it was very cold!

Such a fun experience! The staff was so nice & accommodating, explaining everything up front. The property is beautiful. Restaurants and convenience stores within walking distance. We had a wonderful welcome, and such an interesting & delicious traditional breakfast served in our room. You feel well taken care of and you learn a lot while visiting! Highly recommend.

The staff goes above and beyond. We were immediately greeted with kindness and attention, arriving at 10:00 PM. Let alone the beauty of this Ryokan, the cleanliness is 10/10. The owner had personally introduced herself to us, the owner’s mother makes an absolutely delicious Japanese breakfast. There is many different staff members and all are respectful and accommodating. Next time I am in Kyoto it will be at Toshiharu Ryokan, again and again.
