古い施設ですが清潔で、布団も快適でした。大浴場は混み合うので、時間を選んで利用する必要があると思います。地獄谷野猿公園の往復送り迎えや、帰りは駅まで送ってくださったり、とても親切でした。長野電鉄沿線の情報もいただけました。

インターナショナルな宿

ゴールデンウィークに滞在しました。連休中は日本人の宿泊客もそれなりにいましたが、普段は100%外国人のお客さんだそうです。廊下に世界各国の言葉で書かれたメッセージが貼られていました。この宿から地獄谷野猿公苑や小布施に行ったのですが、宿の人がとても丁寧に観光のアドバイスをしてくれました。親切なホスピタリティ（おもてなし）が外国人旅行者の高評価につながっているのだと思います。

素敵な家族旅行になりました

湯田中温泉駅からも徒歩圏内にあり、付近には飲食店やコンビニもあり便利です。鍵をお借りして、三カ所の温泉の共同浴場の湯巡りが無料ででき、特に大湯は全国の共同浴場の横綱だけあり、素晴らしかったです。
ご主人や女将さんはとてもフレンドリーでいろんなお話や観光のアドバイスをくれました。素敵な家族旅行になりました。また泊まりたいです。

最高の接客！

一人旅で素泊まり、１泊させて頂きました。宿のご主人、奥さんがとてもフレンドリーで明るく、親切に対応して頂きました。一人部屋だったんですが、10帖ぐらいの和室に専用のトイレ、洗面台、シャワー、新しいエアコンなどがあり、一人には十分すぎる部屋で、とても満足です。
夕方と翌朝に宿の大浴場を利用させて頂きましたが、他に誰もいなく、一人で大浴場を満喫させて頂きました。この安い宿泊費でこの満足感。最高です！

Economic, Authentic Japanese Ryokan!

If you are looking for something Luxury, you should find something else.
This is place for someone who wants to see Japanese living style as close as possible.

湯本夫妻（オーナー）が野猿公苑への送りましょうかときいてくださったり、長靴を貸し出してくださるなど非常に親切で、世間話にも花が咲き、人間的コミニュケーションがとれた事が都会のホテルや旅館とは違う味と思いました。ほとんどが外国人観光客でしたが、スタッフの皆さんも楽しんで接客されている雰囲気が居心地が良かった。建物や備品の収納など指摘に値する点もあるが、旅館の質を下げる様なマイナスポイントはない。また、家族風呂もあり外国人の友人ときていたのでお風呂の入り方を教えるのに一緒に入りたかったので助かった。また、チェックアウトの際にリボンに五円玉が着いた鞄につける飾りを頂いた。リボンにはお猿の絵と、ご縁（五円）の意味が英語で書いてあり、私はこのアイデアがすごく気に入り、宿の心意気を感じました。とても素敵だと思います。

塩鮭の日本の朝食が友人はとても印象に残ったようで、日本で一番おいしいと思った食べ物だったそうです。食堂のジュークボックスがレトロで素敵でした。パーティーをしたいですね！
またとまりたいです！

親切丁寧

This hotel is 6-8 minutes walk from train station at gentle uphill. With a few days notice, you can arrange shuttle pick up. We did not. We stayed two nights in room 402. Room is large and clean with safe and fridge. It has a sitting area and small balcony. Traditional Japanese style room. Note hotel is very old and dated but after initial surprise, we grew to really like it. No elevator. Onsite onsen is very nice. They even have a small private one. Shuttle will drop you at monkey park entrance. We saw lots of monkeys and had at great dinner at Gion restaurant by the train station. In the summer the town is very quiet. Note you cannot visit most of the onsens in Shibu unless you’re staying right in the Shibu town and this hotel is a short walk away in neighboring town. For us the hotel’s onsen was just fine. Simple, affordable breakfast was offered. Would stay again

This was a charming little spot. The host and staff really went above and beyond to make me feel at home. He took me and some other guests to a local festival that I never would have otherwise known about, and wound up being one of the highlights of the trip. If you want an authentic connection to what’s going on in Yudanaka, this place is for you. The hotel is super interesting, with a very nice Onsen. You also get access to some local Onsen that would otherwise be inaccessible to tourists. As someone who lived in Japan for several years, has travelled extensively in the country, and speaks the language, let me just reiterate other comments here: this is a really unique and cool place.

We highly recommended a stay at Shimaya Ryokan for anyone visiting Yudanaka. The location, cleanliness & attention to detail were outstanding and host/owner Mr Yamuto (apologies if name is spelt incorrectly) went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and that all our needs were met… even driving us to Snow Monkey Park and providing us with maps for the next leg of our trip. A very positive and memorable experience.

We loved staying at Shimaya. The family run ryokan is clean and has only a few rooms. This meant that it was easy to book the private hotel onsen as a family and, later, my daughter and I had the larger women's hotel onsen to ourselves. The family was very helpful and kind, even driving our family to Snow Monkey Park, offering to drive us back, and suggesting a walking route back for exploring Shibu Onsen. They also provided various sized boots that allowed me, my husband, and our 10 year old daughter to have sturdy boots for the walk along the snowy and muddy path up to Snow Monkey Park. Our room was a perfect size for our family of three, including an enclosed balcony with a nice view of the mountains. It was also located a short walk from the train. While the ryokan only offered breakfast (which was great), there were many restaurants in Shibu Onsen and Yudanaka within walking distance. We had a wonderful time and will definitely return if we are able.

The staff were amazingly friendly and helpful. Absolutely made our stay feel like we were guests in their own home. The building is older and a bit worn but this adds to the experience of staying at a traditional guest house. It feels like it has a very rich history of welcoming guests. The house was spotless and immaculately kept. Our hosts generously offered to drive us to the monkey park gate nearby The monkey park experience was like no other! An absolute highlight of our family’s trip to Japan.

The property and surrounding areas were beautiful covered in snow during our Winter visit. The hotel provided boots so we could easily get around in the snow. The man who was at the front desk during our stay was knowledgeable of the area and kind. We had two rooms and both were clean and comfortable throughout our stay.

Snow monkey ryokan

It was a decent comfy plac. large bedroom. Friendly helpful staff. The owner even gives people rides to Snow Monkey Park and to the train station!
My only disappointment was the picture from their listing showed a large beautiful outdoor onsen with a view, and come to find out that Onsen is not on the property -- it's located ten minutes drive away and closed for winter. That picture was the main reason I picked this hotel, and wanted to show my partner, so we didn't get that nice luxury experience. Oh well. It was decent besides that, and the town is cute and has many onsen!

We stayed 1 night at Shimaya with my family in a Japanese style room. The hotel picked us up from the train station and also gave us a ride to the Snow Monkey Park the next day. The room was comfortable, but old and the washroom had a terrible smell. I could not find the toilet until I asked a fellow guest who said it was out on the balcony. We also had trouble finding the private onsen and couldn’t find anyone who spoke English, so gave up on that. The breakfast was just ok with boiled eggs, toast and cereal. Overall it was a bit disappointing as I was looking forward to the onsen. But it was good for a simple night stay in Yudanaka.

Mr. Yamoto was great as was his wife. If you are looking for a place to sleep for the night on your way to the snow monkeys, this traditional hotel is great. They will take you to the monkeys and provide you with galoshes for the hike. The property is dated though, with some features in disrepair. The town is absolutely dead mid week with basically no dining options so bring food or be prepared to eat what you can find at the local minimart. The restaurants that are open are booked up by guided tours.

Very quiet and relaxing Ryokan in Yamanouchi Onsen Town. I think I was the only person staying here at the time. I had the Onsen all to myself for the night I was there and I wish I had booked one extra night because the Onsen was very relaxing. The staff/owners are super sweet and wonderful people. They even offered me a ride up to the snow monkey park entrance when I arrived. The rooms have an excellent view of the mountains. Hot water and tea cups are waiting in your room when you arrive. The thermos' last a long time because I still had hot water in the morning for a tea on the balcony to watch the sunrise.
Breakfast is basic continental. The fruits were super delicious and the bread for toast was fresh baked.
The mattress was comfy and cozy, I fell asleep within minutes of laying down.
Highly recommend staying here for a night or two if you're looking for a quiet and relaxing getaway in a cute mountain town.

The owner was so nice! We came a couple hours late, past check in, but he still checked us in and gave us a bunch of good info. The next morning, he lent us winter boots to walk around the muddy snow monkey paths. The room itself had a nice atmosphere and view.

Great Stay!

HIGHLY Recommended! Was a great family trip and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. If you have elderly or children please note there is no elevator and the stairs can be a little challenging so request a low floor.

Friendly boss. Can provide transport to/fro Yudanaka station. Just need to use phone and call them. Also to/fro to the monkey park. But need to make sure his driver is around. Family Onsen too small and needs cleaning.

Quaint century old multi-generational run family onsen. Feels like visiting a friend. The hosts are warm and so hospitable, provide local info and recommendations. Breakfast is not to be missed, the player piano, and jute box memorabilia set against a nice spread with local fruit, in addition to a modest western style offerings. A modest stay on a trip to see the macaques.

Entspannung pur im Ryokan

Wunderschön gelegenes Ryokan, wir wurden herzlich empfangen und am nächsten Morgen mit dem Auto zum Snowmonkeypark gefahren. Bei Ankunft darf man dich für den Aufenthalt einen Yukata aussuchen. Es gibt 2 öffentliche Onsen. 1 für Frauen, 1 für Männer und einen privaten Onsen - der ist aber sehr klein. Frühstück ist ok für den Preis von 700 Yen. Das Zimmer ist wunderschön mit Aussicht und die Möglichkeit Grünen Tee zuzubereiten. Das Bad ist schon etwas in die Jahre gekommen aber alles sehr sauber. Wir haben den Aufenthalt in dieser einzigartigen Atmosphäre sehr genossen.

The owner is the most attentive and accommodating man! Made sure we hade all we need, know where to go, even inquired as to where we were going…to make sure our experience was great.
Hotel is older but in great shape. The free/24-7 in house onsen was hot as heck! Varied day by day of course depending on what is being cooked up underground! Very clean.

Amazing stay at Shimaya. The owners, as mentioned in other reviews are outstanding. Gave us a ride to the Snow Monkeys and were very helpful. The breakfast (¥700) was simple and quick - toast, fruit, yoghurt, coffee and juice! Onsen was clean and great. We were on the fourth floor and the views were unreal. Will for sure be returning in the winter!

A Lovely Stay

Would highly recommend this traditional hotel for anyone travelling to Yudanaka. We were made to feel very welcome by the friendly host.
Public onsens are on site. However, a private onsen is available for a small fee, which is well worth it!
A complimentary lift to the snow monkey park the following morning was much appreciated.

This is a small ryoken (bed and breakfast). You can reserve a private onsen (where you and your opposite gender companion) can bath together. The proprietor is nice and gave us a ride to see the snow monkeys. He spoke some English which was helpful as an American and the messages of gratitude from many countries and languages all over the walls suggest that many other travelers from all over the world had good stays.

Highly recommended ryokan

If I could rate Shimaya an 11 out of 10, I would. The inn itself was so charming and wonderful, and that's long before you get to the wonderful hosts' hospitality, joy, and kindness. When we shared our plans for Nagano, we were told we HAD to check out Obuse...which was a worthwhile stop on our trip and definitely added to the richness we enjoyed in Japan! Thank you so much.

Shimaya is a traditional inn with comfortable futons on tatami flooring. Nicely hot onsen, unique deep soaking bath in the room.

Owners are lovely and it was extremely useful to be driven to the monkey park in time for it opening. That's a taxi fare of about 2000 yen so a generous honour provided by the owners.

Although the room was spacious and parking was included, this was a very disappointing stay. The Onsen was dirty, the facility was extremely old and in need of an update. The breakfast was expensive for what you got. They did not restock breakfast, just not worth it. There is no elevator, the bedding is old and there are barely any restaurants around. We went to Goen restaurant - which was good… but also the only one open and nearby. Would not stay here again.

Great Stay

The man at the front desk is the sweetest. He drove us to/from the monkey park at no extra cost. Highly recommend the onsen. You do need to book a timeslot with the hotel. The room was cozy and clean. All 4 of us slept great. Not much to do in the area but the snow monkeys and mountain views were worth it for 1 night.

Old but clean ryokan with indoor onsen not outdoor

This was the first time we stayed at a ryokan. We expected this hotel to be quite old but it’s surprisingly clean, from tiles to tiles! Toilet’s location in the room is unusual to us for it is kind of outside of the room at the enclosed balcony area. We are still glad that it is a private toilet and we have private bathroom. It is a bit pricey for ryokan not including breakfast. One thing which is a bit misleading in the property description is the outdoor onsen. It was the main reason why we booked this ryokan, but found out they only have access to that outdoor onsen. We had to pay extra 600 yen per person and walked a little to get there which is like backyard of another house. And we couldn’t shower there so it made me wonder how clean the onsen was.

This was our second trip to stay at Shimaya. Very convenient to Yudanaka Station and free shuttle to Snow Monkey Park are a must for us with young children. Breakfast teas delicious but unfortunately western style was not available. All staff are VERY friendly and all speak English. Staff will assist at all times.

Stellar Experience

This hotel was amazing! Definitely worth the effort to get to. Ryokan style room is wonderful plus a traditional Yukata to boot. The family that runs the place are very gracious. They are kind enough to shuttle you to and from the Monkey Park. Both the indoor onsen and the outdoor is an incredible experience! This has been my fondest memory of my trip! I deeply regret only staying here for 1 night and will be sure to stay here again!

This ryokan is a cosy place to stay. The hospitality of the old couple running the inn is really good and sincere. The owner will offer a complimentary ride to and fro the snow monkey park, The downside is that this place is about 700m from the train station up the slope and the town is not very lively after dark. The owner will kindly give some recommendations. However the rooms are very dated and the toilet very small. Only very basic amenities are provided like 3 sachets of wash for a family of 4 over 2 days. A change of towels required 100 yen, Considering that we are paying a hotel room's rate for this ryokan, the lack of amenities is a bother. Also the futon sheets are not too clean. My children were bitten by dust mites all over, Overall it is the hospitality is great but entirely not my top choice to stay in given the price we paid.

Mr Yumoto drove us twice to the snow monkey park. He also arranged an outdoor private onsen for us on the roof top. He even provided us with brochures for our next stop in Japan. Their Japanese breakfast was superb. Super cute family owned ryokan and a very pleasant stay!

Lovely traditional ryokan

My friend and I stayed for one night in this traditional ryokan. Mr Yumoto and his wife we’re lovely. We ordered breakfast for the morning; one western style and one Japanese style. Both were great and filling. We got a phone call at 8am to say breakfast was ready. We did not use the Onsen due to limited time. The host collected us from Yudanaka Station after I messaged him so state our arrival time.it is a 2 minute drive uphill. He also gave us a lift to and from the snow monkey park in the morning and let us use his selection of wellies as it was muddy that day. He gave us a lift back to the station. Overall a lovely stay. Thank you :)

Kindest host ever

The owner of this place made my stay wonderful and was a highlight of my entire trip to Japan! He is one of those people who loves helping his guests find the enjoyment in the local sights so he's very involved in making sure you're getting the best out of your trip. Lovely hotel ryokan

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Shimaya. Mr Yumato was very kind in recommending various places to visit that were perfect for our interests. Ms. Yumato prepared a lovely Western breakfast that filled us up for our trip to see the monkeys in the park. Parking was easy and free just across the street. The baths onsite and the outdoor bath just a short walk away were so nice and relaxing. Everything was clean and quaint. Definitely recommend a stay here and visit to the area!

This is a traditional six generation Japanese stay. We absolutely loved it! Mr and Mrs Yumoto are great hosts, very friendly and accomodating. We requested and were given a traditional Japanese breakfast one morning. It was delightful. One of our main reason for our stay was to visit the Snow Monkeys. This location is absolutely perfect. Just down the street from the Yudanaka train station. Our hosts gave us a ride to and from the park which made the stay that much more awesome. These accomodations offer Private Men and Women Onsen's and a shared one as well. There is also a private outdoor Onsen option a few minutes walk away which Mr. Yumoto took us to himself. We watched the sunset it was so nice and the temperature was perfect. We highly recommend the Shimaya for your stay in Yamanouchi. John and Michelle from BC, Canada.

Amazing owner!

I think I have left a positive review already and I would like to add that the owner of the hotel is more than Kind to the guests. He gave me more information than the information centre and he took me to the snow monkey park at the extra cost and moreover he gave me information about the neighbour city such as Obuse and I feel grateful that I was able to make a visit to Obuse on the way to Tokyo and I discovered a very interesting and very cultural small town.

This property has a very non Western, traditional Japanese style which was a lot of fun. The staff is so helpful and friendly. Don’t skip the breakfast they offer for an extra charge, it was delicious and well worth it!! The player piano in the background was a nice touch.

The owners of this small hotel are very friendly and kind. They shuttled us back and forth from the train station and the monkey park. We had a really heavy luggage and there is no elevator but they helped us carry our bags up three flights of stairs.

Very good stay. The owner Mr. Ichiro Yumoto was exceptionally friendly. He explained the local area, gave me a ride to the entrance of the park in the morning, picked me up when I was ready to go back, and even took me to the station (which was just a few minutes walk downhill). All this without my asking! He offers boots, boot grips and umbrellas to borrow, if needed. There is also onsen at the hotel. Japanese-style breakfast was good. I highly recommend this place.

This is a very worn facility; it felt like it last got attention in the 1970s. Though the toilet was described as en suite, it was actually outside on the balcony.

The proprietor never offered or explained the onsen facilities and was helpful only in the ways he wanted to be helpful. He did drive us to the Snow Monkeys but he insisted we wear mudboots, which were ill-fitting and falling apart. He was not available at check-in and the rest of his staff could not help, so we had to wait. We had to wait at check-out too; one group missed their train because they could not check out in a timely fashion.

For the price we paid, I expected more.

Shimaya is a great choice in Yudanaka. The hosts are extremely helpful, arranging drop off and pick up to the snow monkey park, lending gumboots and generally providing very useful advice. The breakfasts are good value. For a small additional fee, Yumoto-san can book you in to an outdoor onsen with a great view- wonderful to do on a cold Winter night. It’s also easy walking distance to the station, Lawson and local restaurants. We would happily return!

Great place to stay for a visit to the snow monkeys.
Mr Yamoto was so lovely and happy to help with advice on travels, even to our next destination. He drove us up to the start of the walking trail and picked us up when we were ready to leave.
The room was very nice with traditional low furniture, futons and tatami mats.It was clean and quiet. The interior of the hotel could do with a bit of freshening up and the bathrooms are shared.
We had the breakfast and there was a choice of western or Japanese. Husband had Japanese and I had western. We were both very happy. There was plenty of food and it was very reasonably priced.
There is a shared but also a private onsen in the hotel. It was great to experience it without the awkwardness of being naked in front of other people. Be warned though, it is extremely hot.

This was a comfortable, quiet and beautiful traditional hotel, the room was nice and clean, and there was a outdoor onsen which you could use for a small fee. Best of all, the owner was very friendly and helpful, he gave us a few suggestions on where to visit in the area and even drove us to the snow monkey park. Would definitely stay here again!

Amazing Hosts

The hotel itself is a bit old, but as soon as you enter, you experience the care and soul they put into their business. The place was very clean, and everyone was very friendly. The Japanese breakfast was also delicious.
We were also treated with lots of helpful information about the area, and even a drive to and from the monkey park.
Even though it was just for one night, it's a stay I'll remember because of the hospitality.

We had the best time at Shimaya! Traditional Ryokan feel, easy walk from station, super attentive host. Be sure to check out the private outdoor onsen - it’s a small extra fee but totally worth it. We walked up the road to the monkey park, and though there were no monkeys that day we thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful walk. Loved this little town of Yamanouchi and would love to come again!!

很推荐的旅店

从日本回来一周了，回来就开始忙天忙地的工作，直到前两天收到simaya的含有我们当时拍的照片的邮件。
这是第二次去日本
第一次去的北海道
这一次日本之旅最有感触的也还是在汤田中和旅店老板的相处。
我和老公日语英语都不会， 真的要谢谢老板不厌其烦的一直变换不同方式和我们交流，
环境满分， 很传统的日式旅店， 我觉得挺宽敞（相对于日本各种10多平方的酒店）
位置离温泉街大概500米，走路要十分钟。 附近有全家，也有居酒屋这些，但比较少。
嗯...早上老板送了我们去看雪猴， 但其实我本身就是乐山人，峨眉山有很多猴子拉， 去了后猴子没有出来，老板来接到我们后说猴子出来了，让我们去看，但确实是因为我们语言不太通啊哈哈， 没有交流的太顺畅， 老板只好把我们载回旅店，拿着地图再告诉我们：猴子出来了， 你们一定要去看，很棒的。 这又再把我们送过去，（门票可以一天多次进出） 确实也不枉此行， 雪猴很温顺可爱， 也很多， 比峨眉山的温顺多了，值得一去， 然后老板又来把我们接回旅店了。
最后走的那天早上，看我们拖着行李，老板又开车送我们到了车站，老公和我都非常的感谢。
如果不想走太远去泡温泉， 旅店老板有自己的温泉哦， 露天的，要预约 ，可以泡45分钟。价格不记得了，反正不贵。
吃了两天早饭， 一天日式一天西式， 日式的米饭真好吃哈哈哈哈。
希望有机会去到这里的人都去感受一下 很推荐的。
希望下一次有机会的时候再来住，也希望我们两夫妻好好练一下英文哈哈哈。

This experience was amazing. We were greated warmly by the owner. He was very helpful letting us know what was happening around town and where to go. The rooms were beautiful and large. There is a private osen that he can take you to for an extra small fee. The view was breath taking. He also drove us up and back to the snow monkies. We never had to worry about anything.

Very friendly staff and beautiful surrounds

Our family had a wonderful stay at this traditional guesthouse. The guesthouse is in a terrific spot only a short distance to the train and surrounded by lovely little restaurants and bath houses. The rooms are clean and the place is well cared for. The staff were very friendly and made every effort to make us comfortable.

Amazing Stay

This hotel is beautiful and traditional! The owners are very friendly and helpful! They speak some English and will go above and beyond help you out. I needed anti inflammatories (advil) and they spent a bunch of time helping me figure it out so I could get the right medicine from the pharmacy. Highly recommend this hotel!!! It does not have an elevator so if you are unable to do stairs check to see if there are any ground level rooms. So glad we chose to stay here!! :)!

Nice older hotel with onsite onsen

The staff was very helpful and even drove us to the monkey park. The place is on the older side and could use some updating but it is comfortable. The breakfasts offered were good and you had the option of either a Japanese or Western breakfast. They were very helpful with options for you for dinner in the town based on what you felt like eating and we weren't disappointed with his suggestions. We had a wonderful time and would definitely stay here again!
