You must try to early-bird walking around this area, you will see different scene of Kyoto.

I could only stay in Kyoto for two nights, but I was most satisfied with my time at Kamuro-an. I wanted a feeling of what it was like to live in a Japanese home, and that's what I found: a place that felt like home. Ookami-san and Danna-sama made a tired traveler feel welcomed. Their local knowledge was extremely helpful, and their gentle guidance was most appreciated.

The house itself is beautiful; clean and in good repair. My room was spacious, and had everything I needed. The neighborhood was quiet and easy to walk around. You will not find a better location in Kyoto, just minutes away from the temples, shrines, parks and shops of Higashiyama and Gion. Bring your good walking shoes!

The food! I can still remember how fresh, interesting and delicious the breakfasts tasted. Breakfast with good conversation is always satisfying. I learned so much about Kyoto culture.

I will always carry with me the sense of peace and genuine kindness I felt as their guest. Even when Ookami-san laughed, trying to find a yukata to fit my big body, and then had to watch my bad dancing! (^_^)

When you are a traveler, a place to truly rest is beyond price; A hot bath is salvation. A soft futon is Heaven. In an age when so many tourists are rushing around, faces down in their cell phones, it's good to know that places like Kamuro-an still exist. Ookini, Ookami-san! *waves*

Our stay at Kamuro An was exceptional!! The futon beds were really comfortable and the room super clean and spacy. The host was really kind and introduced us to many aspects of Japanese home and guest culture. The breakfast was absolutely delicious. We even received Onigiris to bring on our excursions to the many sights of Kyoto. A stay at Kamuro An is highly recommended for anyone who is looking to really get in touch with Japanese culture on their journey!

Authentic Japanese stay. Highly recommend for those who want to experience Japanese culture via homestay. Host was very nice. Various house rules applied, if you’re more of a free style person, house rules could be a bit much as there are curfews and other rules at home. If that doesn’t bother you, I would definitely recommend!

I could write a lot about Kamuroan but I'll keep it short! Okami-san runs a wonderful ryokan. As a guest you will feel comfortable & welcomed. The rooms are lovely, the food is amazing and the hospitality is fantastic. It's also in such a lovely location in Gion, allowing early morning & late evening walks when it isn't swarming with tourists which I definitely recommend doing if you stay here.

Staying here just feels like being invited into Okami-san's wonderful home for a night or two. If you are looking for something a bit out of the norm of regular commercial hotels in the area I can't recommend staying here enough, you won't regret it.

Der Aufenthalt bei Okami-san war einfach wundervoll. Während des Aufenthalts zeigt sie wie man traditionelle Yukata trägt und Matcha zubereitet - auch auf schwierige Essenswünsche, wegen Allergie, geht sie ganz ein und das Essen schmeckt dabei zauberhaft.
Auch das japanische Bad war nach langen Erkundungstouren im Ryokan entspannend und tat richtig gut.
Okami-san ist während des Aufenthalts wie eine japanische Mutter - man wird umsorgt und bekommt einen tollen Einblick in die japanische Kultur!
Wenn wir das nächste Mal in Kyoto sind, dann werden wir definitiv wieder hier übernachten, da es einer der Highlights des Trips gewesen ist!

Our family of four had a wonderful stay at Kamuro An. Our downstairs room was large, with space for four futons, a separate sitting area, and a sink/dressing room. The toilet, shower and bath were down the hall, which did not bother us at all. From Kamuro An, we could walk to Kiyomizu Dera temple, Gion and more sights on the east side of Kyoto. Best of all was the hospitality. Okami-san was so warm and kind, and she enjoyed teaching us about Japanese customs. Her breakfasts were beautiful and delicious. I had a Japanese grandmother to feed me when I was young, and it was fun to see my children enjoy some of the same foods that I loved as a child. Thank you so much for helping us make new family memories in your lovely home in Japan!

Staying at Kamuroan was like visiting extended family that make you feel at home. The Okami-san (female manager of a ryokan) is super welcoming and thoughtful about giving her guests a wonderful stay. She's passionate about hosting as well as sharing Japanese culture through her traditional home, delicious breakfasts, fun conversations, and more. At the same time, she also does a great job giving guests their own space to experience and discover Kyoto for themselves.

Kamuroan was the most comfortable stay in my 2 weeks hopping around Japan for the first time (including expensive hotels and other guesthouses/bnbs) and a top highlight of my trip to Kyoto. It's in a great neighborhood--walkable to temples, shops, and restaurants--while still being quiet and calm. The high ratings and positive reviews are well-deserved. Less than 3 weeks later, I already want to go back.

Kamuro An was fantastic. I was taken care of and loved my experience here. Make sure to ask for a traditional Japanese breakfast or maybe some onigiri or homemade udon. I recommend this place wholeheartedly. It was genuinely fantastic!

I stayed at Kamuroan for 5 nights at the end of a 3-week trip. In terms of accommodation, this was the definitive highlight of my time in Japan. I still can't quite believe how amazing this guest house is.
The owners are incredibly friendly and truly committed to making one's stay here the best experience possible. They also give great tips and recommendations for sightseeing and travel in Kyoto. The house itself is beautiful and perfectly clean at all times, the room I had as a solo traveller was very spacious and comfortable. If you are looking for a traditional japanese living experience, it doesn't get much better than this.
The breakfast cooked by the hostess easily surpassed most of the restaurants I had tried during my trip and it comes with the hospitality and warmth of a family meal. I even got to try making traditional matcha tea! Generally, the experience is much closer to a homestay than a hotel, with the lovely Okamisan greeting you whenever you come back from touring the city and always ready to help out.
Additionally, Kamuroan is located right in the middle of the Higashiyama district, basically around the corner from Sannenzaka, putting some of the most popular tourist attractions easily within walking distance. For such a premium location you'd pay loads extra at any regular hotel.

The thoroughly perfect reviews for this place are more than deserved. I hope that I can come back soon!

The Okami-san so sweet! She wanted to make sure we had the best stay. We arrived to Kyoto early and was able to communicate to her of our arrival. She was willing to let us drop of our bags, go for a stroll around the neighborhood and come back to check in early.

She was very attentive but also allowed us to have our space. Her property is lovely and clean and really makes you feel like you have an authentic Japanese type stay. She has signs everywhere to show you how to do things or learn about Japanese culture.

Loved the experience, would highly recommend if you’re looking for something outside of your typical hotel. Looking forward to another visit

Fantastic place to stay in Kyoto! You feel like you are in a traditional Japanese home. There are two rooms. We stayed in the downstairs room which can easily accommodate 4 people. The place is extraordinarily clean and comfortable. The hosts are among the nicest people you will meet and make your stay unique and wonderful. It is within walking distance of many of the attractions in Kyoto. Be sure to get the traditional Japanese breakfast at least one morning too. This is a must do Japanese experience.

I had an amazing time at Okai.San's ryokan. First, she is super nice and sweet. I am already missing her super fresh, yummy, and elaborate breakfast. I love matcha tea so much!- and Okami-San made me one after breakfast. She understand and speak some English and also was able to answer my questions about places I wanted to visit, and she gave me tips. She was also very nice to my Japanese friend. I told her I want to go back to Kyoto and stay again on her property. Thanks, Okami-San! I am back home now.

The hostess Okami-san was wonderful. She spoke enough English for us to be able to converse. She was always very helpful and accommodating. The traditional Kyoto breakfast she prepared was very good. Okami-san was great at explaining cultural differences and ways to do things. Really felt like we got the traditional Japanese experience we were looking for. I highly recommend this ryokan!

One of the best places you can stay.

What an awesome experience you will have here. Ok am I and her husband are so nice and helpful. Felt like part of the family. Whether it was laundry, calling a taxi, making a meal for us, it was all great. I can’t thank you enough for helping us out with the luggage forwarding and the bullet train schedule during the typhoon. We made it to Mt Fuji with your help. We will stay here again when in Kyoto.

Favourite place ever

I chose this Ryokan based on the reviews I had read - and I am so glad I did. From the moment I booked the excellent hospitality started with emails filled with information about local sights and logistics. We stayed for 5 wonderful nights and received amazing hospitality. Okami-san went out of her way to share the local culture and information and we really felt like we saw the best of Kyoto. From dressing us in yukata for our walk into town, to showing us how to make traditional Japanese food each morning - she did everything she could to make us enjoy the experience. We had 2 rooms downstairs which gave plenty of space and even though we shared a bathroom, I didn't ever see anyone else. Tea / coffee / soft drinks along with biscuits and chocolate are always available which made it seem like home! The Ryokan is close to the main sites and only a 15 minute walk to the centre of town. There is a bus stop 5 minutes walk away and the bus network is great. If you want to experience real Japanese hospitality - then this is the only place you need ever stay. Just wonderful. Okami-san, many thanks to you and your husband for making our holiday so memorable.(To add - there is an outstanding restaurant very close by called Okonomiyaki Kiraku. Don't leave Kyoto without visiting!).

The most wonderful experience!

This was such a welcome reprieve after the hustle and bustle of Kyoto! Beautiful home, very organized and tidy:) Our hosts were exceptionally polite and kind, even helping us learn the local slang so that we could communicate like natives. I recommend this Ryokan for any first-time visitors to Japan, as well as tourists looking to relax after a long day. You arw in good hands here!

Wonderful stay and cultural experience

I traveled with my 12 year old son. Our host was wonderful and took great care of us over 4 nights. Our host made us traditional Kyoto breakfast. The location can’t be beat. So many sites and restaurants are but a short walk. I highly recommend Kamari-An for families.

Lovely place to stay

We were here for two nights and this was a great place to stay. We were made to feel very welcome. The room was well appointed and the host lovely. We walked into Kyoto, and to from the station but the hotel is also very close to bus stops and train subway stations if you don't want to walk. If you want to buy some pottery there are lots of great shops in the area. If I was going back to Kyoto I would stay here again.

Okami is the best host you'll ever have in your travel. Book this place already, it will be the best decision you've made on your trip. Her hospitality is 6 (out of 5) stars and she welcomes you to her ryokan like it is her home. She and her husband will take care of you. She is a perfectionist, and she always tries to accommodate 110% (even before we realized we need something). The ryokan is immaculate. Her breakfast is overwhelmingly delicious and really a steal for the attention to detail and time invested in preparing for the meal (you must order it in advance before arrival). Don't be scared about the shared bathrooms. There are 2 bathrooms and 2 showers for 3 rooms so you'll barely noticed other guests. This is exemplary of Japanese hospitality. Thank you for this wonderful and memorable experience.

An amazing host and an incredible room

My daughter and I stayed here for three amazing nights. Okami san is a super gracious host, more like a personal friend inviting you to stay with them. She greeted us early in the day to store our luggage until check in, and pointed out the sights we might want to see that day. The location and the room were both magnificent! She greeted us each morning with a traditional breakfast, and was always there for us and our many questions. Don’t let the shared shower and toilets scare you, with only 3 rooms I never encountered another person. Okami san knew my daughter loved these disposable paper pour over coffee filters, and presented her with a package when we left. All I can say is...this place is golden!

My family's stay at Kamuro-An was AMAZING! not only was the service the best we ever had, the location was a quiet street a half block walk from great shopping and one of the most popular monuments. When we come to Kyoto again we will definitely stay here!

Charming place to stay

It’s a small family home run by a warm, friendly and helpful woman and her husband. You sleep ryokan style, on tatami mats. It was very comfortable. Be aware, you must share bathroom facilities, but don’t let that stop you from staying here. It’s in a great location and was fun.

Brilliant local immersion experience!! :)

This place is amazing. A complete Japanese immersion experience, our hostess was gracious and kind and knowledgeable! The Japanese breakfasts were delicious and prepared for us, the house was immaculate and the atmosphere was unbeatable. Nice area to walk in, close to temples and shrines that you can lose yourself in. Close to buses and we challenged ourselves to walk and bus everywhere and got comfprtable with it. Even though this house is shared, we felt private in our beautiful Japanese room. Loved it. Can not recommend highly enough.

Most beautiful, Unique and memorable experience.

It was a really beautiful stay. Lovely owner always took care of us a lot. She was very kind and provided us delicious cookies and green tea for free. Japanes traditional house and room were very beautiful, unique and memorable experience. I strongly recommend this place to everybody and make sure that this place must be one of few you must experience in your entire life time. I am sure it's located in very convenient transportation approach and especially closed to Gion which is popular street as Geisha's street(We saw one really Geisha walking across the road and she looked amazingly adorable in beautiful Kimono Japanese traditional cloths. Everyone there were possessed by her. I hope you guys have a chance to see her by staying here and trying to go there as many as you can. ::))

Such a warm and welcoming home! Highly recommended

Staying here really enhanced our visit to Kyoto. Our host was so lovely - extremely helpful and acommodating. She really went out of her way to ensure we had everything we needed at the home but also information and advice about activities and bookings in Kyoto.

The house was a lovely traditional style and our room was big and clean. It was in a location that was easy to walk to interesting things, shops and transport.

Little gem near Kiyomizu-dera

From the moment we arrived in a downpour and Okami-san's husband rushed our luggage into the ryokan so it wouldn't get wet, we felt so well taken care of and had all our wishes catered to before we even knew they we were wishing for them!
We were greeted with a little welcome cake while filling out the paperwork, while the host was readying our luggage in our room, and had a very pleasant night in the very traditional room, laid out with tatami mats and futons.
Breakfast the next morning was superb, with Okami-san letting us sample a variety of traditional dishes from Kyoto in obanzai style. while we were out, our room was cleaned and fixed down to the most minute detail.
The hosts were showing such friendliness and warmth, really trying to understand how they could make our stay even more enjoyable.
The ryokan is a ten minute walk from world-famous Kiyomizu-dera, the streets there lined with matcha and pottery shops and all other areas in Kyoto are either in walkable distance or a short bus ride away.
