The building and the rooms don’t have much character. The food was pretty good. The location is great: It’s very close to Shijo Kawaramachi and Gion. If you’re looking for authentic Japanese experience, I would pick a different place - a more traditional ryokan. There’s no public bath either. The staff was nice.

お食事が美味しかったです。施設は多少古さもありましたが、清潔感はありお部屋も広めでした。洗面所の照明が暗くてお化粧をするのに見えにくくて不便でした。大浴場も付いていたので疲れた体をゆっくり癒すことができました。機会があればまた利用したいです。

ホテル風和風旅館

こちらは和風旅館と言っても写真で見てもコンクリート製のホテル仕様の「和風旅館」。
だから大人数の宴会もしていたし、完全にホテル風。

初めての京都

初めての京都でしたが、何より立地が良かった。清水寺や高台寺に近く、散歩しながら鴨川まで歩いて行ける場所。閑静で風情感じられるし、大浴場も清潔感がありました。ホテルスタッフも皆親切で大変良かった。有難うございました。

Our family loved the cultural experience this ryokan provided. Quiet spot but in an excellent location - a huge plus for our family.

We wanted to experience some historic sites but also have a more local experience. Bikes on the property were hands down our favorite amenity. We biked to so many incredible off-the-beaten path gems - this cemented Kyoto as one of our top two local experiences in Japan. You need to park the bikes in designated areas.

Breakfast was deliciously authentic but we definitely would have appreciated a more reasonable time (8:30am was the latest) since we are technically paying for it. Our family really enjoyed the sophisticated servings of fresh Japanese. Portions are small with many side nibbles for each person. Menu is fixed. Those who are picky or big eaters may not like this format.

This was our first ryokan. We all loved the whole experience of staying together in one open room and being provided with yukatas. As a ryokan this is an older property which gives it its charm but modernized to make it a simple, comfortable stay. This ryokan will be loved by those want to experience the more traditional no-frills simple Japanese way of dining and lodging. It was part of what made Kyoto so memorable for our family, including my kids.

Whiie the property is in a good location, it is a bit old. The room has some old smell and it might be coming from the mattress. When we checked into our room, the air conditioning is not turned on making the air more stuffy during the summer heat. The line of staffs are generally nice and helpful but they seem a bit reserved.

This was such a great experience in an incredible part of Kyoto. We were greeted the moment we stepped through the front door by amazing staff who took our bags and kept them secure until our room was ready. The breakfast the next morning was incredible, it was one of my favorite meals in my short visit in Japan. If you are looking for a peek of Japanese tradition and amazing service, this is your place to stay.

Loved Location, Food and Room Size!

Stayed here with my family (2 adults / 2 kids) And we loved the experience! Rooms are big and comfortable for a family of 4. Highlights: GREAT LOCATION & Traditional Japanese Breakfast. Staff were very helpful, room was clean, comfortable and “modern” compared to other Ryokans. And water pressure is awesome. We’d definitely come back.

We were expecting a true ryokan from what we saw on the website, but this was a ryokan style hotel.
Check in was quick and easy. The room was very clean. The front of the space was humid, but the sleeping room was cool enough. The futon beds were comfortable enough, but could have used extra pillows. Internet was intermittent, but not a problem for us. Hardly any amenities.
The breakfast was interesting and enjoyable. The staff at breakfast were very accommodating, as were the staff in general.
The area we were in was beautiful and right near a lovely downtown area. Very touristy, but enjoyable.
We did get the checkout time wrong…totally my fault…but when we arrived back at the hotel 15mins late, it was very clear that we had to evacuate the room as soon as possible, which stressed me out.
They did hold our luggage for us for a few hours.
Overall, the experience was okay.

The staff were awesome, they helped us cut up melon that we bought from the store. Perfectly portioned. Beautiful place to stay, very peaceful. Breakfast is a must! Delicious Japanese style, feeling full with energy for the day of exploration.

Just completed a three night stay, and overall had a very good experience. The staff made all the difference - they are simply wonderful. We stayed in a traditional room with futon mattress beds on the floor - a first for us as middle aged Americans used to standard Western bedding - but they were comfortable. The wet room with handheld shower and tub was great. I must confess, though, that the room had a slight musty smell probably from too much damp air and not enough ventilation. Even still, we were pleased with our time at Gion Ryokan Karaku. The location is superb. The gorgeous Yasaka Shrine is basically next door, along with all the shopping, restaurant options, and culture Gion has to offer.

The room is very clean and quiet, comfortable , and beautifully kept traditional Gion room.
The staffs are very kind and polite. Their dinner course meals were amazing!
The Gion Ryokan is located in the center of the old Gion neighborhood , and the hotel was above than my expectations.

5 Stars – A Truly Magical Stay in Kyoto!
We absolutely fell in love with Kyoto, and staying at Gion Ryokan Karaku made the experience even more unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like family—the hospitality was warm, genuine, and deeply thoughtful. One of the sweetest touches was that our 3-year-old was given a different kimono to wear each night at dinner, which she absolutely adored. Every detail of our stay felt authentic and lovingly curated. It was the perfect blend of traditional Japanese charm and heartfelt care. We can't wait to return!

Fantastic stay, perfect location!

My son and I had an absolutely wonderful stay. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly, and the breakfasts were epic! We also loved the location on a quiet street, but very close walking distance to so many interesting things!

I can only say good things about this ryokan. Everyone was very nice and accommodating. They cleaned the rooms daily. They offer razors, toothbrush, and a couple other things for a very small fee which i did not mind paying for at all because theyre trying to encourage people to bring their own to eliminate waste and with the amount of convenience stores nearby you could always pick one up there if you dont want to buy one of theirs. We stayed in the karaku suite and it was absolutely amazing. Spacious with a fridge, kettle and an absolutely beautiful view in the private onsen. There is a laundry mat within a 10 minute walking distance that made washing our clothes very easy. We did not get any of the food offers as we planned to go out and explore the absolutely beautiful area it is located in. They called a cab for us when it was time to leave and waited with us until we were on our way. Definitely going to be staying with them for our next trip.

Ryokan experience

Ryokan with excellent service and big rooms.
We had the traditional Japanese breakfast. It's big and have variety, but if you are a picky eater some of the items might be challenging.
If you want to experience a Ryokan, this does the job

This was a wonderful hotel… BUT, the pictures on Expedia were NOT ACCURATE. It did not have a bed as pictured and it did not have a bath or onsen. We enjoyed the stay but were disappointed about the way it was presented.

Beautiful and comfortable Ryokan. Super comfy beds, serene rooms, great water pressure and thoughtful japanese breakfast. Easy walk to main part of Gion, and well connected by taxi/uber to all of Kyoto. Highly recommend!

Honestly I cannot even remember how it was lol becos it was just nothing special.

Good location. I think the best thing about choosing this hotel is the location where it’s in Gion and is super close to the Kiyomizu-dera area. You don’t have to be squeezed onto the bus getting to these tourist spots which is the BEST point, everyone should book a hotel in Gion for at least one night but not necessarily have to be this hotel LOL

Price. I booked at a very high price with nothing included except a breakfast. This ryokan has literally 0 facilities, no onsen no nothing. I just paid for this price with the location and the ryokan-kind of style.

Breakfast. Very underwhelming but it’s okay. Points added for treating us a birthday fruit plate when I requested them during the reservation.

*bring your own toothbrushes oh yea they don’t provide ones.

Gion Karaku was by far our best stay in Japan. The property is very well located in the heart of Gion, it is well managed. Badal took wonderful care of us throughout. The rooms are clean, modern and well supplied. I would gladly stay here again.

Had a great stay at Karaku. Very nice Ryokan style hotel, but we opted for the Western style beds which was great. Very nice and friendly staff and a great Japanese breakfast every morning. Highly recommended.

It does not worth the money. I mean this is a nice hotel if you want to experience the Japanese traditional style, however the hotel is a bit old and the price is not worth of what you get. Old amenities, old bathroom.

This Ryokan is in an excellent area- very convenient to temples , restaurants. The staff is the most courteous and helpful staff I have ever met and we travel quite a bit . We stayed as a family of 4 very comfortably in a traditional room . When we return to Kyoto we will definitely stay here again .

Not even close to worth the money. The food was so pretentious it was barely edible—they used Tokyo dashi and not Kyoto dashi on the overcooked rice? At least get one thing right! The only good news, it’s in Kyoto and that place is amazing. Stay literally anywhere else and eat the food from the million and one small businesses.

This was our first stay at a Ryokan. The service from the staff was amazing. The manager greeted us for the set breakfast that we booked with the room. He greeted us with a big smile and nothing was a ‘no.’ The breakfast was a special traditional Japanese set breakfast in the tatami dining room. Later he helped call a taxi for us after our time of shopping and sightseeing around the Giovanni district of Kyoto. A very memorable experience at Gion.

좋은 숙소입니다

위치가 교토 명소 관광하기에 아주 좋습니다. 청수사, 기온 번화가, 강변을 도보로 갈 수 있고 버스 노선도 많습니다. 조식은 일본식으로 나오는데 이틀 다 맛있게 먹었습니다. 창밖에 가림막이 있어서 조망이 별로 안 좋다는 것 빼고는 다 좋습니다. 다음 기회에 다시 방문하고 싶습니다.

The service was excellent, the room was spotless, the beds were comfortable and both breakfasts were delicious.

At one point, we called for a taxi but it was running late. Someone from the front desk came down to the road to help us hail a different taxi to help us catch our train. I highly recommend and plan on staying here my next time in Kyoto.

Four of us stayed for one night only at Gion Ryokan Karaku ( half board) The Kaiseki dinner was amazing! Beautiful presentation of food and staff were very attentive.

The location of Gion Ryokan Karaku is very central. Just a couple of minutes away from Yatasa Shrine and an easy 15 minutes walk to Kiyomizu Dera temple.

We would recommend this Ryokan to anyone who enjoys good food and service

Excellent hosts. Rooms very clean and well maintained. You need to be comfortable sleeping on tatami mat floor on a futon but it was part of the experience in visiting Japan for us. We did not try the food as we wanted to explore the cuisine in the town. Great location that was walkable to many sites and the shopping district and easily accessible to transit.

Awesome shower room!

Absolutely loved the bathing room! My partner typically doesn’t take baths but using the Japanese method of shower first then bath has completely changed his mind! The tub is big and the perfect size for relaxing, and the bathing supplies smelled great. We felt so relaxed and always had a great night’s sleep! We also enjoyed the Yukata provided and the simplicity of the room. Overall we felt very relaxed and enjoyed our time! The only issue was the air, our room was nice and cool the first night and then the following nights we had to sleep with the windows open. Not a big deal because it’s early spring so still fairly cool at night and no bugs, but I can’t imagine if we stayed during summer!

We had an amazing experience at the Ryokan Karaku. The room was big and in excellent conditions, breakfast was superb and the staff was super attentive.

This was my favorite hotel we stayed at in Japan. The staff was super helpful and attentive. We booked the room with a large bathtub and sitting room. Our family of 4 fit just fine. The futons were really comfy. Our room was clean. I was really happy with the location. It is next door to a big shrine that lights up beautifully at night. It is walking distance from many temples, shrines, and historic Kyoto landmarks. We plan to book this hotel on our next trip and I plan to stay longer.

Wonderful stay, excellent service, and the soaking tub with views in our suite room was so relaxing! Highly recommended for a ryokan stay while in Kyoto. Quick walk to nearby shrines and temples, and strolling through Ninenzaka streets.

This property is in a great location - you can easily walk to many shrines, Gion and the subway stations. Public transport is very good for getting to all sites. I thought the dinner option was a bit pricey. I really enjoyed my stay and would return.
